Privacy Tools & Technology FAQ – January 20, 2003

  1. What is the ISTPA Privacy Tools and Technology (PT&T) Working Group?
The ISTPA is an international alliance of business users and technology providers who wish to clarify and resolve existing and evolving issues related to security, trust and privacy. Within ISTPA there are four working groups, namely Privacy Framework, Privacy Tools and Technology, Legal and Regulatory Requirements, and Outreach. PT&T is focusing on new privacy protection techniques through the creation of privacy tools and technology research projects to carry out objective and unbiased testing and subsequent evaluation of the results. This work is intended to assist with the understanding of the relationships between security, privacy and trust. Within these projects consideration is taken of the emerging globally diverse regulations and legislation and compliance of the same.

  2. What is the current PT&T focus?
The PT&T is focusing on new privacy protection techniques through the creation of privacy tool and technology projects to carry out objective and unbiased testing and subsequent evaluation of the results. This work is intended to assist with the understanding of the relationships between security, privacy and trust. Within these projects consideration is taken of the emerging globally diverse regulations and legislation and compliance of the same. These projects are undertaken to provide guidance to member companies and to inform governmental and non-governmental organizations of the project plans and results.

  3. Why is Privacy Tools and Technology research important?
As legislative, regulatory and market requirements for privacy protection progress, it is essential that trusted and reliable solutions be developed and deployed that meet those requirements. The PT&T research is an essential resource for constructing trusted and reliable solutions for privacy protection.

  4. What are PT&T research goals?
Through facilitating privacy tools and technology research projects to identify emerging or recent capabilities that support enhanced protection of personal information and through these efforts to:

    • Understand, clarify and resolve consumer privacy concerns in various electronic business segments.
    • Understand the business implications of the deployment of specific privacy technologies and related policies.
    • Utilize emerging or recently established technological tools to demonstrate enhanced security, privacy and trust.
    • Develop demonstrations with a focus on near term capability, inter operability and market value.
    • Produce a knowledge base and commentary on privacy mechanisms and products.
    • Act as a facilitator for user and supplier dialogue, across industries and national boundaries.

  5. How are the project priorities selected?
The project priorities are selected based on:

    • The outputs and drivers from the Framework Working Group of ISTPA.
    • Technologies, which are non-biased, vendor-neutral and address requirements for demonstrating security, privacy and trust.
    • Based on highest value to the ISTPA members and participants.
    • Concepts, which can be utilized in multiple electronic business segments and other commercial channels to address security privacy and trust issues.
    • Concept investigations, which have near term business application, identifiable market value and realization potential.
    • Concepts with potential to lead to standards creation or business best-practices which address consumer concerns over the use of personal data.

  6. What is the current PT&T project?
At this time the PT&T is concentrating on privacy preference tools and is planning to research the viability of P3P as part of a business solution. It is recognized that P3P is a powerful vocabulary for representing privacy policies but that by itself this is insufficient for a complete business solution. This research will look at P3P from the consumer's viewpoint and from the implementer's viewpoint.

  7. Who will use the results of the PT&T Research?
Information technology product and service management companies, developers, architects, designers, engineers responsible for constructing privacy solutions; public and private entities exploring and assessing solutions; those preparing their organizations for compliance or seeking to create competitive advantages; and the audit community.

  8. How do I gain access to the Research?
Access is available to all current members of the ISTPA. The research results will be available to members via the ISTPA members-only section of the Web site at www.istpa.org.

  9. What is the relationship to other privacy initiatives?
This ISTPA Privacy PT&T research is a unique effort and by design seeks to be independent of any particular privacy policy initiatives or efforts to create or influence any legislation or regulations. The ISPTA bylaws and organizational goals make clear we are not a lobbyist entity with particular privacy views or agendas to promote.

  10. When will research results be available?
The ISTPA will publish early results information for members and project sponsors. A more general release will be announced.

  11. What material is available?
A Privacy Tools & Technology White Paper, Research Project Briefing (PDF), and this FAQ is available for download at the ISTPA web site.
